OK GO are a band of four who are an American Rock band. They are known for creating quirky and elaborate music videos that stand out from any other ordinary music video. A considerable amount of their fame stemmed from their creative and low budget music videos that they would produce. they were promoted by social sites such as youtube and Facebook which is impressive considering how successful they are through social sites.
Single camera is a big part of many OK GO music videos. The single Camera technique is when the the cameramen use only one camera in one take to film the whole music video so that it is an continuous one shot video throughout. In the music video "I won't let you down" what makes the single camera technique more impressive is that they use a a range of different equipment such as a octacopter to film extreme high angles. This specific music video was created due to an inspired trip to japan when they went to a Robot Restaurant. to prove that most of their fame came from the interesting and usual styled single camera shot they had 50 million views on just one of their music videos which was "Here it goes again". OK GO have gained much attention from their style of music videos as well as winning awards-OK GO won a grammy for the 'best music video' which proves that although single camera techniques if are done in a impressive and usual way they can be more interesting than a regular music video. OK GO uses a technique in all their music videos called single camera. This is used throughout their music videos filmed in the same take. Instead of changing and doing different takes they relocate the camera while still filming so that it eventually changes to different shots. It is used as it is a low budget since you are only using one camera to shoot and saves editing you would have had to do if you were filming with multiple cameras. The reason why one single take was perfect for OK GO music videos was because they have many continuous action shots happening one after another in the music video which adds to the interest of the videos as they are often inventive to watch. I think it is the best way to explain and show the viewers that is using a single camera because it is set in one location and through the use of sequence shots following the action. In “The writing on the wall” its clear that the music video is all shot in the same place. You would not get the same effect where as if there were multiple cameras. The camera is always following them so you feel like you are more part of the music video. It feels like you are following them in the building, it gives a perspective to the viewers where as if they were using multiple cameras it wouldn’t feel as included and interested in the music video. It gives the sense of interest and engagement. In “The writing on the the wall” they mostly use mid shots and tracking shots, the mid shots show off the quirky things they have created for the music videos (makes up through the use of mise en scene) and the tracking shot follows them to the next scene of quirky things. I found myself more interested in the music video as usual because of the single camera techniques used. I was paying attention to the music video visually rather than listening to the song. I found it fascinating at what they achieved in the music video as they had to shoot the music video with one take, if something went wrong they would have to restart the whole entire take. The single camera also shows off the time and effort that has gone into the music video. A camera stabilizer is one of the key things in a single camera video because when moving the camera to another scene via tracking shot it has a smooth movement. After shooting the music video no editing would need to take place as all the effects in “The writing on the wall” were taken place live and no cutting or replacing shots. The disadvantages of a using a single camera is that although it is cheap, but can go wrong very easily. It can be very time consuming since if there is one mistake you would have to retake the whole entire video. Where as if you were not shooting single camera you could easily edited out and replace certain shots with others. Single camera has a limited selection of what it can be used for, single camera would not be ideal for a television program as it would make it hard to tell and understand the story/narrative structure. Personally I think that single cameras are only good for short films such as a music video and adverts.
