Duke Dumont-I got uEditing Techniques: At the start of the music video there are some animations to show to the viewers that the actor is going into the simulated world. Through out the music video there are similar animations of a digital fuzz, this is to remind the viewers that he is in a simulator and too good of a holiday to be real life. There is simple changes between shots at a steady pace. This is showing the viewers the mise-en-scene so they understand the environment that the actor is in and how beautiful the country that is presented in the music video. This also lets the viewers understand the narrative as it is about the actor entering a luxury holiday, the clearly cut shots are making it as easy as possible for the viewers to understand. Mse-en-scene: When the actor is in the simulated world his surroundings are very much suited to the scene. When he is in a posh house in a hot country there are clear features such as props that support the fact that he is a luxury enviroment. Sunny weather and cocktails are a clear way of showing that he is in a luxury place. The way I know he is abroad in a hot country is that the terrain is very tropical which is also clearly shown in the music video by a range of shot types and clear editing. There is promotion shown a number of times in the music video, puma shoes are shown from a range of shots. When the actor is in and out the simulated world he is wearing puma shoes. Both POV and Long shot show the shoe in different angles and the puma shoes are clearly shown visually through out the music video. At the start of the music video there is the actor in his apartment looking down and bored until the package arrives (the simulator). The weather before he enters the simulated world is raining and dull. With the way that he looks-bored it sets a depressing mode, which gives a better understanding for the viewers what is going on. Cinematography: The music video is mostly POV shots to show the viewers the experience the actor is having. It puts a different perspective on the music video, rather than just watching the music video like you would regularly with any other. The POV shots are trying to make you more interested in the music video. When close ups, mid shot and long shots are used is when they show to the viewers the reaction towards the experience the actor is having in the simulator. Particularly the close-ups are important as it captures the emotion of the actor so you have a clear understanding that he is excited and happy, which is shown. Narrative Structure: The story of the music video is about a device that can teleport you digitally to a dream place like warm and hot country’s. Not only he can choose were he wants to go but what he does in the country so he gets up to water sport activity’s and party’s etc. The narrative structure is well told that I feel it has the potential to be a trailer for a movie. With the mix of diegetic and non-diegetic sound it makes you feel like you are in the present moment that is being shown in the music video. Also the POV shots work with the sound in making you feel more apart of the music video which is the whole story of the song. Different techniques make the narrative strong in the music video. Sound & Lyrical Interpretation: In the music video the diegetic and non-diegetic sound being blended together, the lyrics and the diegetic sound. This is because the narrative structure needs some diegetic sound to make the viewers understand a little easier of what is going on in the scene. The diegetic sound is not louder than the lyrics so you can always clearly understand the lyrics. Through out the music video the sound is blended repetitively but a number of times when the sound is balanced is when ever the POV shot is in or around water. At the start of the music video he jumps into a swimming pool and it has that natural sound of the water as if you were to actual jump in the water. This gives a more of a 1st person feel to the music videos. Most of the music video is shot with a POV shot and the diegetic sound works well with that as again when you watch the music video you feel like you are them. The topical beat goes well with the music video as when you are visually watching the music video you get that feel of a holiday feeling. Christina Perri-Jar of hearts Editing Techniques: There is an animation of black ink and a jar on her chest. This represents the depressing tone the music video is set in. The point of the jar of hearts is a way to show that the male is taking the hearts of the women shown in the music video. The animation helps to show the emotional side, as it is not as graphic as it sounds in the title. Also when they are near to kissing a misty smoke comes out of each other’s mouth. This represents the heart entering and exiting each person’s body (emotionally). Cinematography: Close ups are used to show the emotion of Christina Perri as the music video is very dark and emotional. When she is singing you can tell by the close ups on her face that she is meaningful thanks to the close up. Wide shots are used to show off the dancers and mise-en-scene. When the women are dancing it shows the ratio of girls to boys, you can clearly tell that the girls are empowered. This tells more about the narrative on how girls are teaming up to face the emotional damage the men are leaving them in. The dancing is expressed in the dancing as passionate. Mise-en-scene: The lighting in the music video is dark which is resembling for the narrative structure. It supports the fact that the song is dark and viewers will get that gesture from just watching the music video. The video is not in black and white but a filter has been added to make it look near enough to black and white to give the music video the dullness to link with the passionate vocals. If the items or surroundings are not black and white they would be a dull colour so they are not standing out from the dull effect, such as the colour brown. One of the most used setting is a street road with what looks abandoned. The cars are not smashed but are classic muscle cars which suits the dull colours. The mist on the street is the key thing that makes the street look abandoned since it is giving the impression of a non-busy and lonely street. Narrative Structure: The narrative is about girls being hurt by men in relationships. Not physically but emotionally which is why the title of the song is “Jar of hearts”. The music video shows girls empowering as ratio for girls to boys is much greater. There are key features such as mise-en-scene that help you understand the narrative of the music video. The way that the setting is dark and gloomy will make the viewers understand a little more about the emotions of the females. The whole point of the narrative is to show what damage men can do to females in relationships emotionally. Sound & Lyrical Interpretation: The sounds and lyrics work together to support the narrative of an emotional love story. The lyrics are affectionate and sung with passion, which is shown. The beat is slow which is another feature to support the emotional feel to the song/music video. The piano is what gives it the slow and steady beat. Comparing Jar of hearts to I got U on the differences of the music videos. Mise-en-scene & Narrative structure: Jar of hearts and I got u have different purposes to make the viewer understand the mise-en-scene. The music videos are almost the complete opposite to each other. Lighting I got u-The lighting is a lot of natural lighting and if lighting has been used its to brighten up the scene. It gives that feeling of a happy environment. Jar of hearts- The lighting in is mostly dark to prevent the thought of the viewers thinking that the music video is meant to set a happy mood. When the dark lighting is to show that the actor/singer is emotional, sad and depressed. Because both music videos have a different mood set and narrative it effects the mise-en-scene which is clearly shown in the music video. Not only does the mise-en-scene have opposite features but also the narrative of the music videos. I got u music video is showing the viewers a good time and near enough a dream holiday for many of the viewers. Where as Jar of hearts has a way of expressing emotions to the viewers. Cinematography: Because of the purpose in I got u music video is representing a simulated world that only the actor can see so that you believe the narrative more it is mostly shot in POV shots unless there are shots of him outside the simulated world.
The purpose of I got u music video is to make sure you understand the narrative of a simulated world that the actor is in. POV shots are only used in this simulated world so that you know Cleary when he is in and out of the simulated world. The only time a POV camera shot is not used is to see his reaction on the simulated world. The camera shots used to show the emotions of his reactions are similar to the camera shots to show the emotion of Christina Perri when she is singing passionately. Although both music videos are opposite in most features but the camera shots are used in the same way in both music videos despite the narrative. Close ups/mid shots- is used in both music videos to show the emotions to the viewers.
