Eminem- Rap God (Genre-Hip-Hop)Camera: Close up-On the main character in the music video, Eminem so that you can see his emotion as he sings the lyrics about a part in his life. A close up is key as the narrative structure is very dark and meaningful so it is important that the viewers understand his feelings as he describes it through the lyrics. Long Shot- A long shot is to show the surroundings around Eminem so viewers can clearly see the Mise-en-Scene through out the music video. Mise-en-Scene: Technical Computer Room- The room is dark lighted and quite empty with only computers and wires that are scattered around the place. Eminem is in the Centre of the room sitting in a chair attached to the wires that are scattered this gives the impression that he is a god and is important as clearly there is no one else in the room which links to the title of the song Rap God. A lot of scenes have just Eminem in the shot as the song is about him so it gives the viewers a impression that he is more important than other people. When there are other people in the shots he is being cheered on by a audience which gives the narrative structure a stronger belief that Eminem is a Rap God. Editing: The change between shots are quick which suits the rhythm of the song which is also a fast pace of lyrics. The shots need to be quick as the genre is Hip/hop and this particular genre has very fast lyrics spoken in short amounts of time. Their is a number of shots where by it has close up of Eminem with a colourful and light background and has clearly been added as an effect. This lets viewers listen to the lyrics closely as the only thing to focus on is his face and the background. Representation: The impression that viewers should get is that Eminem is some sort of “Rap God” in the genre that the song is set in which is Hip-Hop/Rap. All the features add up to inform the viewers that Eminem is some sort of king. Sound: The lyrics are spoken at a fast pace and at one part of the songs it was hard to keep up with what was being said, I found it too fast and lost track of what Eminem was saying. My Chemical Romance- Teenagers (Genre-Rock)Camera: Close up- The close up is key in the music video because it shows how passionate the band are about what they are singing about. They are so passionate that you get a urge that they are scary because the faces that they are pulling suits the (genre- Rock). High Angle- The high angle is used in the music video to capture a large amount of the audience that are watching the band on a stage. This decrease the power of the audience making it out that they are not that important as the singers. Swell as the main singer is in the corner of the show which makes out as if the audience are looking up to the main singer which looks like a leader towards the crowd in this shot. POV- A POV shot is a good shot to have in this music video as it involves the audience a lot. This shot will help show and repativly remind the viewers of the music video that the singer is a leader to the audience in the music video. Editing: I wouldn't say that the change of different shots are fast or slow paced, just at a regular pace. This suits the music video because it shows off the show that the band are giving to the audience and their reactions and feelings are expressed in the music video. The time given for most shots gives a clear view of what is going on during the show, this helps us as viewers to understand the narrative structure through the lyrics that are being spoken. Representation: The shots and editing make the band look like leaders, specifically the bands main singer. The impression that everyone in the room looks up to them is clear as their are also female dancers that are on the stage but you still get the gesture that they are not as important as the band. You can tell this because all the female's are dressed in the same clothes and are doing the same dance routine where as the band are doing what they want to do-not following a dance routine! The females are also in a formation where by they get close to the band but are not near in hands reach. Mise-en-Scene: The scene is set in a secondary school hall, you can clearly tell this because their is a stage with a group of teenagers as the audience cheering on the band. A massive give away to know that the music video is set in a secondary school is that their are cheerleaders dancing with the band. The school hall has been buffed up with some props you would see in a rock concert rather than a school hall such as band equipment and railing to seperate the audience the band. This gives the impression that the band are not from the school and are visitors performing as if they were at a gig. The school stage is a sign that the bands target audience as the music video relates to teenagers and involving their everyday life (school). After watching the music video after a while i started to get the impression that the band performance that the band were giving was scary as props like Guns and Gas masks were been introduced by the cheerleaders which did not start with the scary props. this could tells us that the song is making the impression that as the band started to sing the crowd got louder and more physically interested, this then refers to the genre-Rock. Sound:The vocals from the main singer get more slurred and louder as the song goes on which tells the viewers that the genre must be rock. No SFX are used just pssionate shouting from the band that are trying to get a point across about teenagers which links to the title of the song "teenagers" Guns N' Roses-Sweet child O'mineCamera: Close ups on the band members faces as well as instruments, Close ups on the instruments makes a clear point to the viewers that the genre is Rock. Mid shots have been used through out the video to include band members playing their instruments in one shot. A number of tilt shots in a mid shot composition have been used to fit in more than one band member in one shot. Editing: The whole music video was in a black and white filter which could indicate that the song could be about a memory. Until right at the end of the music video the last shot started to fade into colour which is another reason on for the music video to be about a memory. Their was a steady pace of different shots as it fitted the rhythm. The lyrics were in tune and it looked as if the music video was live footage from the stage. Representation: I get the gesture that the band wanted their music video to look like natural footage that was not directed. The band acted as they would if their were no cameras videoing them. It looks as if their was no director because the music video is a change between them performing and also with them messing around with their friends and just in general having a good time. Mise-en-Scene: The video has clearly been taken in a large studio, however they have used 'homely' props, large floor rug, tables with lamps on. The band have invited friends (girlfriends) to be in the room, almost giving the impression of a party like gathering. The whole of the film has been shot in black and white and they have used bright lights to make certain areas stand out most of this light is centred around the lead singer Axel Rose. The Band's emblem is significant in the video as it is predominant in the opening shot and features on a number of occasions throughout the film. Sound: The music video is all non-diagetic as the song was edited in and in tune with the video, although the music videos looks like the video is diagetic sound. The instrument have also been added the same as the lyrics so the music video is all non-diagetic Bombay Bicycle Club-Always like this (Genre-Indie)Camera: Long shots and Mid shots are mostly used to involve the surroundings and props. Such as the instruments that they have on them at all times. The long shots are useful in the video as it sets the scene which makes a understanding to the viewers what the Mise-en-Scene is. Mise-en-Scene & Editing: Filters have been used to give the Mise-en-scene a vintage theme to the music video. They have achieved this look by mixing clear pictures like those you would expect to get from todays video technology and mixed these with scenes you would have seen if you had recorded on old 'VHS' tape. The editing looks a bit rough, and the pictures have a slight sepia look to them which you automatically think of as 'old film', there is a black boarder around the older scenes and signs on the pictures which, if you were using a VHS tape player were typical so this also gives the impression of vintage recordings, this is also intensified by their use of fast forwarding and pausing. The clothing that the band are wearing is very casual but would not have been out of place in the early 80's as well as in todays young society and is a good choice for flicking the filters to make the video vintage and recent. Representation: I feel that this video is showing us that although years have passed by things (surroundings, clothing and even youth of today) is not changing as much as we think it is and that what the older generation has gone through in their youth is not that dissimilar to what the youth of today is experiencing. Sound: The song is all non-diabetic sound because throughout the song the only sound that you can here is the actual song as its been edited into the music video. Drake-Energy (Genre-Hip-hop)Camera: Close-ups, Mid shots and Long shots are the most used. This is because their is a lot of meaning through out the music video and helps the viewers a lot about what the song is about. You can tell that Drake is passionate about the point he is trying to get across and the camera shots such as close-ups, it help the viewers identify his emotions when he raps. He is dressed up as certain people when he's rapping about them in the lyrics so the camera shots also help the viewers easily identify the person Drake is trying to talk about. E.G. Long shots show the Mise-en-Scene so you can start to get a picture about who it is he is trying to be. I find that i could find who the person was by not even listening to the lyrics, so the editing and camera shots did a good job of allowing the viewers to understand. Mise-en-scene: Each scene was very well presented in terms of understanding the scene. I could easily find out the narrative structure as key things like props helped me understand who Drake was rapping about. The clothing was the biggest give away for coming to terms in understanding who drake was rapping about as i could tell as loads of thought was clearly gone into clothing. Brands that they would normally wear would help you identify who the person was. well copied body language was what i found that was the best in terms of understanding the the song & narrative structure. E.G. Obama when he has his speeches often has a lot of hand movement while speaking and this was shown in the music video. Representation: Their were a mix of scenes, a repetitive scene was when it was just drake in a all white room and this made me think about why this scene was repetitively shown through out the music video rather than any other scenes, and it was because it made me think about more what he was saying in the lyrics and i could see his instant reaction which was him emotional and passionate. Drake was jumping around and running up to the camera, the body language drake gave shown that he had some anger in him. the white background made me focus more on his body lauguage so he must be trying to get a point across to the viewers. Sound: The beat is slow paced with calming vocals which suit together perfectly. It makes the song feel dark with a slight depressing tone with the way Drake speaks. At the start of the song before their a steady beat and any lyrics been sung. Their were many sound effects through out the song but especially at the start of the song which suits the narrative structure, in the way you understand the way Drake feels about singing the song. Katy Perry ft Snoop Dog-California Gurls (Genre-Pop)Camera: Mid shots to show the surroundings around the artists. A mid shot i secretly used like a close-up in this music video as a brilliant camera composition to show off the costumes, as you can tell the costumes have had a lot of time and creativity input into them to get the point across to the audience that the narrative structure is set in a candy fantasy land. It was as if the mid shot was a close-up for the costume to show them off. Long shots- To show off the effects and to make it clear to the viewers watching that it is a fantasy world full of candy. Close up- To show the emotion and happiness of the artists face is vital because it helps the narrative structure in such a way so that the viewers know the mood of the characters through out the music video. As you can tell from this screen shot (below) of Katy Perry without knowing what she is singing about that she is happy and that is all because the close-up shot is capturing just her face so the viewers are on full attention on Katy Perrys overwhelmed face. Representation & Mise-en-Scene: Very bright lighting is used to support the fact that the genre is pop indicating the viewers that it is a happy environment. It also goes well with the fantasy world theme. Slow switch of shots but not in a way of a dark theme like Eminem’s music video but to show and make it clear to viewers that it is a happy place. The slow switch between shots show off the hard work of time that has been clearly spent on things like props such as surroundings and costumes to make the Mise-en-Scene understandable to viewers. The mix of editing, Mise-en-Scene and camera shots used together as a great way of showing off the fantasy world in every possible way.
