Outkast-Hey ya Hey ya is in a mixture of two styles, Narrative and Live. throughout the music video their are narrative features especially at the start and end of the music video. It is being presented by a commentator and then when the commentator finishes-thats where the Live style comes in. When they are singing the song their is a mixture of non-diegetic and diegetic. Diagetic sound The crowd screaming when the band Outkast are performing to them. The commentating at the start and end of the music video. Non-diagetic sound The song I get the geusture of happiness from Hey ya's music video. The band themselves are happy while singing and the way they sing with enthusiasm is expressed. They also dance which is also making the audience happy in the music video. Many shots are shown where they are screaming with happiness and love for the song the band are performing. The Diegetic sound of the crowd screaming is also another clear example that they are happy. Through out the music video i cannot spot one person without a smile on their face. Cinematography: Mainly close ups and mid shots were used to show the emotion of both the band and crowd. Long shots were used to show off the dancing that the band were doing. Also to show the population of the crowd, the Long shot showed a great number of girls cheering on the band. Editing: Mainly at the start but also through out the music video a range of editing techniques are used to remind the viewers watching the music video the style of the music video (Narrative & Live). Black and white with a structure of a old TV set is to remind the viewers that this band are popular. To show that the band are attracting many people which creates a happy atmosphere. The family watching them on the TV are dancing and are clearly happy with the performance that the band are giving. Mise-en-Scene: The majority of the music video is set in a live performance stage. With help of the costumes and insturments it is clear that they are performing to the audience. The costumes also tell the viewers clearly who the band are and who the audience cheering them on are, the band stand out. Eminem- My Name IsThe music video for My Name Is by Eminem has a mixture of a narrative and performance style to it. The music video is very much more a narrative with littered parts of performance through out the music video. They have also cleverly missed up the two so that the performance can be introduced as part of the narrative. Eminem is also in the narrative when their is not a performance role being shown so it is clear to there viewers that he is the main character/focus in the music video. When a similar scene is shown in the music video such as the screenshot above i know that the music video has a performance style to it. I know this because he is the only person in the shot, not only is he the only person in shot but the camera angle is a low angle. The low angle's effect is to show that Eminem is in important and has some sort of leadership to others. Eminem is in the narrative and this screenshot above is a clear example that he is. The screen shot is a action shot of him being a president that has something to do with the narrative. This tells us that the lyrics are linked to the narrative which is important because it gives the viewers a better understanding. Mise-en-scene:Their are a range of scenes where it is to do with the narrative. But one particular scene where it tells us that the music videos has parts of a peformance style. The scene is shown through out the music video a number of times. The costumes are very much suited to the scene-this also helps us tell when their is a narrative scene in the music video. Cinematography: A common camera shot in the music video is a long shot & mid shot which shows the costumes and scenery in the narrative parts of the music video. With cinematography helping viewers understand the mise-en-scene it allows the viewers understand the narrative style that is in the music video. Sound: It is all non-digaetic in the music video as sound has been added to the music video which is the song(Eminem rapping with the beat) and some sound effects that are replant to both narrative and performance styles. Editing: Some editing has worked well with the styles of this music video, particularly the performance. Their is a certain part where Eminem is on a old TV but the editing makes it clear to the viewers that the TV is switching channel and that the TV is old-The editing works well with the sound effects in the music video and the TV scene is a clear example. Jay-Z- Big Pimpin' ft UGKBig Pimpin music video has a theme of expensive items that only a successful millionaire could have. It makes Jay-Z in the music video look like a boss of some sort. With half naked pretty girls to a luxury yacht, Jay-Z shows a life that many of his viewers would desire. With help from the a range of different styles used in the music video-it helps the viewers understand the life that Jay-Z is living/singing about.
Cinematography: Mid and wide angled shots are used to show off expensive items and surroundings. The mid shots capture the expensive jewellery that is shown- chains, watches and rings. The wide angle shots capture the moments in the music video were their are a greater number of girls to boys which relates to the title of the music video, "pimpin". Sound: The only sound in the music video is the singers (non-diagetic). Their is only the lead singers and beat that are heard in the music videos. The fact that their is no diagetic sound does not effect the music video too much as it does not have a strong narrative. The whole idea of the narrative is to show off a luxury lifestyle. Guns N Roses - EstrangedThe music video has a number of different movement shots which goes with the sound of a repatatively slow and fast beat. The pan, zoom-in/zoom out, tracking shots etc captures a clear understanding for the viewers on what is going on in terms of the narrative for the music video. Example: When their is police breaching through a building the tracking shot explains that the police are in a hurry and are determined to get into this house with the pace they are rushing at and the type of movements they are making (sprinting). The music video is all non-diegetic sound as only the song is playing over the top of the music video. I can tell this because when their is action in the music video no diabetic sounds are used to go with it. The music video has two different scenes that repetitively change one that follows the narrative and one that just shows the band playing at a live event (but with no diegetic sound). This is used to tell a story and to entertain the viewers at the same time. Daft Punk - Da FunkThis music video has a strong and detailed narrative, compared to the other Top 100 NME music videos. This music video concentrates more on the narrative of the music video than the actual song. The music video is mixed with diegetic and non-diegetic. But the diegetic sound is used more than usual in this music video and also the diegetic sound is just as loud as the actual song. The reason for this is that the music video has a purpose of telling the viewers how annoying it is to have loud music while talking to people in public. Another reason to knowing the music video's narrative is more concentrated on than the actual song is because the song has no lyrics.
During the music video their are a number of time-lapse's used to make the viewers understand that the night is starting to get later. This is a great technique to use for making the audience understand something in particular. |
