Major Label: SONY RECORDSWhat is SONY Records? Sony records is a recording industry that remains to be the oldest recording label in the history of recording. From 1887 to the modern day sony records has been one of the most successful labels as they are involved with a lot of familiar faces in the music industry such as Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora etc... Pros & Cons of major SONY RECORDSPros Money- Major labels such as Sony records have a impressive and large amount of money through the business of their recording label. Having a company that earns a lot can allow you too expand your business world wide by investing in tours, expanding budgets on videos etc. Connections- Media outlets will start to talk/discuss about the music you are producing so that more of the public are interested in the companies activity. Size of record label- As the record label starts to expand by its popularity it will be able to work with other companies in the recoding industry and through out. The bigger the label is the more companies in the industry would like to work with them. Cons Lack of attention- As the company is a major label in the recording industry, their are many new musicians joining and leaving. This means that because of the numbers of musicians the company will have to drop a few musicians depending on whats best for the company at the time. It is extremely competitive. Keeping a fan at the label- For the artist that is getting signed it is important you keep your popularity on a high. If your popularity as a musician to the public starts to drop you will find it hard to stay in the record label as it is very competitive within the musical industry. The label will kick the musician out of the label if it is not meeting to the labels standards. Difficult Deals - Minimal Passion for Music - A number of people who work at the record label have little interest in the job they are doing, their just their for the money. This can effect the record label as passionate workers is key to a succsesful label. Warp Records: Independent LabelWarp Records is an independent British record label. They focus on experimenting with electronic and dance music. The independent label was founded in 1989 by 3 men (Steve Beckett, Rob Mitchell, Robert Gordon). After i research their youtube channel i realised that they have a wide range of different electronic music. After watching a few music videos from the playlist "Warp music videos"I got the gesture that their aim was to make electronic music that would be unique and stand out from the rest. Pros & Cons of a independent label Pros Love for music - Employers at a independent label that have a high level of interest for the particular work they are doing will make the label a much more successful label than if the employers were not interested. The employers will be willing and determined to put their full effort into any work that comes their way. Freedom to work with whoever they want - Compared to a major label their is less pressure to do brilliantly in the top charts. This gives the independent label more time than the major label would have to bring out music that is successful regularly. Close Relationships - As a independent label is full of a small group of employers the relationship between colleagues would be closer than if they were working in a major label. The better the chemistry between employers the greater chances the independent label would be successful. Artist Friendly Deals - A major label would have complex deals as the high level the label is at, the more complicated it gets with highly successful artists. This is the opposite with a independent label, the deals are dealt in a different way where the artist does not have to fight for a better deal on their behalf; contracts are more flexible so the artists do not have much of a problem. Cons Money - The worse part of a independent label is that as the label is only small that means the money is a lot less greater than a major label. This means the independent label are restricted when it comes to similar things like tours. As the budget is low some things like a tour seem hard to make worthy. Disorganised - As the label has a small group of employers things can easily slip or be forgotten, which can lead to small or big disasters This does not go for all independent labels but for some it can effect the label. e.g. accounting. Size - Due to the size of the independent labels although being a smaller group can make the label more accessible compared to a major label. But a smaller size group comes with a restriction of less contracts and little money where as a major label does not have this problem, This gives a independent label less power than a major. Self ProducedPros and Cons of being self producedPros
Easier to produce your own music - Self produced artist/bands can share their music easier than a record label. As the band do not have employers they can do everything by themselves at the pace they would like to go, they have a lot more freedom in terms of making decisions about releasing songs. Keep your own rights - As you are self produced their are no contracts involved. This means you have more control over things like how your music is used and the price of your music. If their were contracts involved then complex deals could complicate certain situations. Keep your own money - As you self produced your music and have no employers to pay the money can go straight to the artist/band. It is all on your own terms - You can decide when its time to do extra events that promote your music and expand the songs popularity. e.g. tours, how you are marketed, signings etc. Cons There is no money behind the release to help promote your music - when you release a song self producers have to finance themselves where as major labels have a budget to start with. This means that it gives you less of a chance of making the song as popular as major labels could. May not have the contracts to promote releases that major/independent labels have - As you self produce the promotion as well as the music. You do not have any contracts such as promoters, agents etc. As their is not a team this can take awhile to build these contracts so that the music can be promoted to the public. Learning when doing it - If the artist/band is new to distributing their own music this can take time to learn the process of promoting and distributing the song. Time Consuming - As well as learning the progress is time consuming on its own but its as stressful and heavy loaded work as a regular full time job. But promoting a record can be hard work.
