Extension of income: Extension of income is an opportunity to increase income like synergy.
Extension of income is useful to recording artists, for example the hold a concert and there will be stalls selling merchandise like t.shirts etc this will not only create an income for those selling these items but will provide an extension of income to the recording artist via trademark rights.
Another example this is for an artist using their popularity to start selling their goods. Beyonce has taken advantage of a popular song of hers and has created a clothing line using this form of extension of income.
Synergy: Synergy is when two media products come together and can increase of income and popularity. Music videos are perfect for synergy as a deal could be done with a company were by the artist displays the product in their music videos, this is demonstrated in the picture above of Nicki Minaj with the 'beats pill'.
Promotion: Music videos are a good way of promoting yourself as an artist, especially if you are an unheard of artist.
Music videos have made many artists like PSY with the song "Gangnam style" go from unheard of to internationally well known. "Gangnam style" is a perfect example of promotion via music videos, his song was made more desirable because the video also incorporated a catchy dance and this was due to people viewing his video, he is now a well known household name because of this. This is a good example of the music video has doing what it was meant to do, drawing in more attention from viewers which illustrates the song.
Extension of outlets: Extension of outlets is when the artist expands their songs across networks like "youtube" which allows them to expand song more to a wider audience. This allows viewers to access the music video making the audience bigger and allowing them to share it with others by attaching the video to a post on on line social media sites like 'Facebook'. This way of viewing a music video can also create another source of income e.g. a certain amount of likes/views on "youtube" could lead to the artist getting payed.
There is a high chance of another company being interested with a successful artist and may also wish partner up with them creating synergy but also could create an extension of income.
Producers strategies: Their are different producer strategies- Major label and independent.
Major Label: Companys like "warner brothers" who are not only successful in the film industry but one of the biggest companies in the music industry, referred to as one of "the majors". The Major label are the "bosses" of smaller companies as they are self funded.
Independent: Independent come after "Major labels" so companies like Virgin who have to buy licenses from companies like "Warner Brothers" in order to reach a wider audience through other countries.
Editing Case Study 1.6
Cutting to the beat: When the beat is in time both visually (the music video) and when you can hear it, but cutting to the beat is when the beat matches the time that something in the music video is being beat to when you can hear the beat, playing together at the same time. This gives the illusion of making the viewers think that the sound is Diegetic. The reason for using cutting the beat is really just to grab the viewers’ attention. As they see and hear the beat they will be more engaged as it should make viewers listen closer to the lyrics/beat because the beat will now be the main thing they think about while watching the music video
Visual Effect: Visual effect is a special effect but used to set the scene e.g. Fake backgrounds to set a scene that in reality to do would either be impossible or simply too expensive. Every film that has a scene set in space is a visual effect; while they are filming they are just behind a green board that allows a visual effect to be added on later to the editing process.
Miming & Lip Syncing: Lip sync is used in most music videos, especially some of the latest music videos. Lip Syncing is when they are shooting the music video the artist will mouth the words so that when later on the music video is being edited they will match the pre-recorded with the lip movement so the final outcome will look like the artist is singing in the music video when they were recording it visually.
Multi Image: Multi image are a multiple of screens showing different shots of images. When a multi image is presented it looks like a collage showing many different pictures. This can be used in things like adverts such as charity’s because if they only have 30seconds to get the point across of what they would like to say then a multi image will be used to show many reason on why to donate in terms of a charity advertisement.
Chroma Key: Chroma key is the name of the tool that you use to layer picture/videos in the same camera shot, A green screen is behind the subject so that you are allowed to set a scene or just to black out the background. Photographers use Chroma keys to block out anything in the background when they only want a picture of the subject e.g. Product advertising. Streams use this a lot especially gamers so when they are playing the game they will have the video form of gameplay edited on to the Chroma key after recording himself playing the game so that the viewers get both a view on the player and the game in one camera shot.
