Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (80s) The 80s and 90s music videos are very similar in both ways of visually and vocally. They are both in a pop genre but despite the fact that it is a pop genre there is a lot of dancing and the camera shots to show of the dancing are similar such as zoom-in, long shots and pan. The footage quality is a giveaway that the era is 80s as it is slightly fuzzy compared to modern music videos. The beat is similar in terms of it being fast and gives the gesture that it is energetic and would be the type of song in a nightclub during the 80s. MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This (1990s) There are a group of dancers females and males dressed in 80s-90s clothing (bright colours) it goes well with the dancing they do as it represents the 90s. They are very lively in the music video but it goes with the fast paced beat and lyrics. Camera shots were used to show off as many people dancing as they could such as long shots. The main singer was placed in front of them dancing as if he were a leader to the rest of dancers. They were having fun as they were showing energetic behavior, which you can tell from the music video every shot is the main singer (MC Hammer) mostly in a dancing environment such as a club. The Mise-en-Scene has a repeated setting where there is just a white background that makes you look at the dancers. It’s what gives the music video the 90s feel. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (2000) This music video represents the 21st century the best as the music video contains of a heavy amount of special effects. Special effects started to become big and interesting to the world which is why adding effect like in this particular music video at the time would attract a high population. The music video mise-en-scene is a game. The music video is recreating a series of video games during the era. During this era their were popular video games that the music video have used to put in their music video, that is why i said this music video represent the era the best. The quality of the graphics is symbolic for the 21st century. Major Lazer & DJ Snake - Lean On (Present Day) The music video from present day shows that the quality all round is much better. The audio is clear and so is the visual since the music video was filmed with HD camera's that none of the other music videos have been filmed by. The cinematography is also more interesting than the other music videos as a range of steady movement shots work well when capturing different angles of the dancers. The reason why the camera movements are much smoother is that new filming equipment have been developed so that their are no unprofessional filming. Task 2After looking at a 70s, 80s, 90s, early 21st century and present day I can clearly see that a lot has changed visually in music videos. The quality is a big difference, from 70s to present day their is clear change in quality. One thing that has not changed as much is the narrative, some narratives are strong and some are weak through out the years starting from the 70s.
All the music videos except from the present day have longer duration on the music videos, this is due to technology at the time. The editing software that we use present day is way more advanced than in the other eras. Some of the simple and cheap things that we can do now would have been much harder to do in the years before such as different editing techniques. Also the equipment is more advance so being able to film a music video becomes much easier. Their are a wide range of different cameras that can be used. This allows the directors to have choice on which camera depending on the money they would like to spend. Cheaper cameras can still offer great quality.
